6 Key Marketing Lessons for Those Getting Started: Part 4
Attention, digital beginners! I am counting down my key marketing lessons, and the next two will focus on creating success online. I recommend checking out my previous articles about always marketing, remaining patient and not hiring, especially if you already have matters of technology locked down. However, if you do need a digital helping hand, stay tuned. Up next is lesson number four, which focuses on your website.
LESSON 4: Your website matters. Optimize it.
I’ll start with the potentially obvious: you have to have a website. Full stop. An online presence is no longer just useful, it’s absolutely necessary. Secondly, your website needs to be optimized.
What do I mean by this? I mean that people need to find your website and stay on it when they do in order to find what they are looking for. As we established in my first lesson, you can’t build things and then expect people to come. They won’t, unless you guide them there. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) may sound scary, but it’s not rocket science. It helps lead traffic to your site with keywords. You can also use social media to point people in the right direction. After all, what’s the point of having a website if no one ever sees it?
When people find you, you also want them to stay. I have seen my fair share of young companies with clumsy webshops. Broken buttons and unclear descriptions can be damaging for trust. If you are not selling, ask yourself “in what stage am I losing customers?” They may be clicking on all the right links, but give up on the purchase once they are already in your shopping cart. What a loss of money on the table! Keep in mind that your average consumer is still wary of buying things online – make it easy for them.
All of this may sound discouraging, but don’t worry. You don’t need a degree in computer science to make a website. Brandcrafty serves the perfect example. We made our website quick and dirty. Have a look. If you want to follow in our footsteps, also check out website builder Wix. Don’t make creating a website any harder than it needs to be.
